Free training and support for those using The Spelling Routine with Mapped Words® While it’s far easier for children, especially those with poor phonemic awareness and a high dyslexia risk, to be shown the sound value using Phonemies®, many adults don’t yet feel confident using them, so the routine will also be shown without them.

The Spelling Routine Training
Parents and teachers come to workshops to learn The Spelling Routine. In these clips they are using it with only six sounds, as they will be teaching SSP in term1 and the sounds are those associated with their first GPC set - satpin This strengthens phonemic awareness and phonolocial working memory, and bonds the word into the orthographic lexicon (the brain's word bank). Before teaching children to use the Spelling Routine they need to be able to do it. The Spelling Routine is introduced within the Speech Sound Play Plan, which forms Phase 1 of the Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach.
On this Spelling Routine with Mapped Words site, however, we assume that parents and teachers are not using the full Speech Sound Pics Approach. Instead, the Spelling Routine with Mapped Words® can be used as a standalone routine to help each child learn to spell words quickly and with confidence, particularly high-frequency words often referred to as “sight words”, to ensure that these words are learned through accurate speech-to-print mapping rather than memorisation.
This is a powerful activity for dyslexic children, as it supports accurate speech-to-print mapping and reduces reliance on lmemorisation or having to learn spelling rules. The Spelling Routine with Mapped Words® is grounded in the evidence around how words are learned and stored through orthographic mapping. Are you the parent of a dyslexic child struggling to spell words? Or have a child who can read but can't spell? Visit the Recoding for Dyslexia page.
Teach them the first 6 Phonemies

When using The Spelling Routine children in Reception can instantly recognise and currectly spell over 400 commonly used (high frequency) words before they start Year 1. Use this with high dyslexia risk pupils to address the underlying difficulties with phonemie awareness and orthographic learning. We make it much simpler, by showing the code, and then teaching the brain to store that information.
